What's In Your Toolbox?

We can set the best intentions. We can make plans, set goals, get excited about what’s ahead, and truly believe we’re ready for whatever comes our way.

And then… life happens.

A wave of grief comes.

A hardship hits.

A stumbling block appears.

Something stands in our way. We get sidetracked. We take an unexpected detour. And sometimes, we get discouraged.

It’s inevitable.

We can’t always control what happens to us, but we can prepare ourselves for what we’ll reach for when life gets hard. That’s why I believe in having a spiritual toolbox. Think about an actual toolbox. You don’t wait until something breaks to go looking for a hammer. You have the tools available because you know that eventually, something will need fixing. Life is much the same.

What’s in your toolbox?

Maybe it’s prayer or meditation.

Making art.

Listening to music.

Writing a gratitude list.

A trusted friend who will listen without trying to fix you.

Journaling.

A walk outside.

Time in nature.

Community.

Taking yourself on a date.

Asking for help.

Your toolbox may look completely different from mine. The important thing is that you have one.

Build your toolbox before you need it. Because there will be days when you don’t feel strong.

Days when your carefully laid plans get interrupted.

Days when grief catches you off guard.

Days when you wonder, How am I going to get through this?

And on those days, you don’t have to have all the answers.

You don’t have to figure out the entire road ahead.

You just need to reach into your toolbox and use one of the tools you’ve gathered along the way.

Take the next step. Then the next.

And remember: a detour doesn’t mean you’ve lost your way.

Sometimes the things that feel like they are breaking us are actually building something in us.

Maybe you’re not falling apart. Maybe you’re becoming stronger.

So when life gets hard and it will ask yourself: What’s in my toolbox?

And if it feels a little empty right now, start filling it.

You may need those tools sooner than you think.
